The Hempel Foundation invests in sustainable coatings technology
The Hempel Foundation's primary purpose is to maintain a solid financial and economic base for the Hempel Group, but it does a lot more than that. It is dedicated to making a difference by promoting the SDGs – our collective blueprint for peace and prosperity across the planet.
In line with the goal to advance on SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, The Hempel Foundation has established a globally leading education, research and innovation center to make coatings and surface protection more efficient and more environmentally sustainable. CoaST was founded in 2017 and is the Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Center at DTU in Denmark. It is a fast growing and highly diverse international environment that facilitates research, education, and international cooperation. The Center focuses on optimising coating technologies across the whole value chain, including raw materials, formulation, testing, production, and application.
What does the Center aim to achieve?
- Provide in-depth knowledge of current coatings challenges
- Develop mathematical tools that quantify coating behaviour
- Design experimental equipment for accelerated testing of coatings
- Develop novel coatings to establish laboratory facilities for formulation and versatile coatings testing.

Making coatings more efficient and more environmentally sustainable
The Hempel Foundation's goal is to create a world-class research environment, which can help make coatings more efficient and more sustainable. That is why for many years the Hempel Foundation has been collaborating with DTU (Technical University of Denmark). In 2017, this collaboration culminated in the opening of CoaST – the Hempel Foundation Coatings Science and Technology Centre. CoaST has a Maritime Test Center in the Hundested harbour, Kattegat, North Zealand, in Denmark, to test new and developed coatings in a real life environment. The aim of this facility is to expose products in atmospheric, splash/tidal and immersed zones.Learn more about the facility in this video: CoaST Maritime Test Centre, Hundested (youtube.com)
